Africa Project
Students must complete a project based on Africa and choose from the following below. This project is worth 50 assessment/test points. Students can do another project for extra credit, up to 25 additional assessment/test points will be awarded. If a student does an African mask for their first project, the extra credit assignment must be of a different medium. (For example, 1st project is an African Mask, second project is an African Instrument.) The following Rubric will be used to score this assignment.
African Travel Brochure
•Make a travel brochure for an African Country. Find pictures or draw pictures.
•Be foldable, front and back.
•Give examples of the 5 themes of geography
Visual Timeline
•A timeline with pictures listing the major events of one of the following empires: Egypt is of limits
–Songhai
–Mali
–Benin
–Ghana
–Zulu
–Wolof
–Ethiopian
–Kush
–Nubian
•Timeline must highlight major events of the empire selected.
Research Paper
•Choose an African tribal group and do a 2 page report on their culture, and history.
•One page will be on their culture (ancient and modern) and the other page will be on the history of the tribe.
Traditional African Tribal Mask
•Make and decorate an African mask. You must provide a picture of the original mask.
•Write three paragraphs describing the who made it, what was it made of, when was it used, where was the tribe located, and why of the mask was used by its tribe.
African Tribal Instrument
•Make an African musical instrument, demonstrate how it works to the class. Write three paragraphs describing the who used it, what it was made of, when it was used, where the tribe that used it is from, and why it was used. (Each instrument has a specific name. An African drum is not an African drum, there are different types.)
Traditional African Weapon
( The first caveat I must make is this, your weapon cannot violate school policy. No real weapons.) Do not just bring in a tree branch.
•Create a Traditional African Weapon. Google Traditional African Weapons, nothing modern. Write three paragraphs describing the who used it, what it was made of, when it was used, where the tribe that used it is from, and why it was used.
Interview of a Vietnam War Veteran Extra Credit Assignment
Students will have the opportunity to interview a Vietnam War Veteran for up to 100 points of extra credit. They will need to get pictures of their veteran and make a poster. The interview with veteran will be used for a 2 page biographical essay.
Vietnam War Research Presentations
Students will have the opportunity to conduct research on a topic from the Vietnam War and create a research presentation for their topic to present in class. 100 point project.
